"No wicked witches here"

Films: Flying Monkeys (2013)

Alias: Skippy

Type: Mystical

Location: Civilized Area

Height/Weight: That of average humans.

Affiliation: Evil

Summary: One of the most common depictions of impish demons is that of a small man with bat wings. It's a rather general description, but some creatures of myth fit it to a T. Take for instance these horrid simian monsters who menaced a small American countryside for a while. And it all begins with a pet monkey...

History: One day, a father bought an innocent-looking monkey for his daughter. The monkey, named Skippy, initially seemed like a great pet. But then night falls, and Skippy reveals himself to be a Hsigo, a Chinese monkey demon that multiplies every time it is killed or grievously injured. Sure enough, it and its duplicates are hit so many times that there is now an entire flock of them ready to descend upon the populace. Only the survivors and some people who know of the Hsigo menace stand a chance of stopping the spread before daybreak.

Notable Kills: Nothing special.

Final Fate: In the end, Skippy's new owner is forced to shoot him in the gut via crossbow, reverting him to a normal dead monkey, and felling all of his duplicates in one go. The day is saved.

Powers/Abilities: Can turn from normal monkey to its true form during the night, and every time it's killed by conventional means, it will live, and sprout from it a perfect duplicate.

Weakness: If killed by enchanted weaponry, it will not duplicate. Also, if the original Hsigo dies, so too does its duplicates.

Scariness Factor: 3-Let's gloss over how its name is based on a grammatical error (more on that later), and focus on how ugly these things are. Looking like hairless primates with bat wings, these creatures are as hideous as they are powerful. Just imagine how huge the flock would have become if we didn't figure out their strange powers sooner. Still, the CGI lets them down completely, and the few practical props look like off-the-shelf Halloween props.

Trivia: -The word 'hsigo' is a completely nonsensical mispronunciation of 'hsiao', the Romanization of the Chinese word 'xiao'. In Chinese mythology, xiao is a name that applies to many creatures, one of which is indeed a monkey with bird wings.

-The xiao, or hsigo, is often thought to have been the inspiration for the flying monkeys in "The Wizard of Oz".
